12. Arkell-Hardwick, A. AN IVORY TRADER IN NORTH KENIA 1903 London 368 pp. 23 ill. Fold out map. One of the most exciting elephant hunting books written. As a result of extenuating and devastating circumstances, the author hunted for months and bagged not one elephant. However the book contains some of the best descriptions of actual elephant hunting throughout eastern Equatorial Africa. A RARE and sought after work. Author hunted with Harry Selby, who took Robert Ruark on the safari which resulted in Horn of the Hunter. Scarce and desirable. 36. Burton, R.F. THE LAKE REGIONS OF CENTRAL AFRICA 1961 NY 412 & 468 pp. Ill. This expedition left the Tanzania coast with Burton & Speke traveling west to Tabora, then to the Malagarisi River and Lake Tanganyika. On the return trip Speke went to Lake Victoria. Burton took 3,500 cartridges for elephants and 10,000 for other game! Near fine in vg+ jackets AND in original vg+ slipcase. Great reprint set. $ 175.00

38. Capstick, Peter SAFARI THE LAST GRAND ADVENTURE 1984 MS 291 pp Ill. Ltd to 2,500 signed, numbered copies. Very popular Capstick title and one of the scarcest even in reprint. Fine. $ 125.00

39. Capstick, P. PETER CAPSTICK’S AFRICA A return to the long grass. Signed limited ed by the Buckingham Mint. 213 pp, ill, all edges gilt. Nice production of one of Capstick’s more popular titles. By the way, this book is dedicated to Gordon Cundill, whose book A HUNTER’S AFRICA, a limited ed of 1,000 copies, is getting low in stock (see our limited ed. section for this title). Fine. $ 130.00

40. Carpenter, R.R.M. MY AFRICAN SAFARI 1937 NY privately printed for the author and published by Roycrofters Press. 34 pp Ill. Story of the author’s 1936 East African safari. His professional hunter was Donald Ker (of Ker Downey Selby). Book in near fine condition Scarce. Very few copies were printed for the author who was a major player in the Boone & Crockett Club and a noted international hunter. His other books were printed in editions of 100 and 400 copies and we doubt that this printing exceeded 25 copies. Inscribed “with the author’s compliments,” signed and dated. $ 1,100.00

41. Carpenter, D. HUNTING BIG GAME IN THE SIERRAS OF CHIHUAHUA 1905 OH Privately printed for the author. 56 pp. Ill. Mainly deer hunting in the Mexican Sierras. Dedicated to the author’s longtime friend and eminent Mexican Sportsman, E Creel who was also Governor of Chihuahua. Exceedingly rare. Virtually never seen offered. Deluxe full gilt leather binding, silk moire end papers. Original gilt/deco wraps show some wear on edges. Light soiling on front free end paper otherwise VG+ to near fine. This is a RARE book, we had in once before in the 1980s. $ 3,500.00

44. Clark, J. THE GREAT ARC OF THE WILD SHEEP 1967 1st ed., 2nd prtg OK 247 pp. Ill Bibliography. Since its initial publication this has been the definitive book on wild sheep of the world. 57. Foran, W.R. THE KENYA POLICE 1887-1960. 1962 London First ed. 237 pp. Ill. Covers the British East African Police and Kenya Police. More than his hunting titles, this is Foran’s scarcest work, never reprinted and issued in a small edition. One of the few copies we ever had for sale. 206. Denker, Kai-Uwe ALONG THE HUNTER’S PATH Thoughts and Experiences of a Professional Hunter. 2006 Namibia 506 pp, profuse color ill. Denker, one of Africa’s most respected active PHs, was born in Namibia and grew up hunting—both for himself in Namibia, Mozambique, Cameroon and Tanzania and with clients. Denker was the first hunter allowed into East-Kavango (Bushmanland) in 1993 and through his pioneering efforts, that relatively unknown part of Africa has recently yielded some great hunting trophies. Originally issued in two separate limited editions, this trade release about hunting two of Africa’s greatest game animals combines the best of both books and adds new chapters by well known and more recent professional hunters. You don’t get engaged to a Cape buffalo, you get married to him for life—his or yours! And the African lion, a hunter itself, does not respond well to threats. So when it comes you must make up your mind and clear out for it covers 100 yards in half the time of an Olympic runner. Some animals may be considered more dangerous or beautiful—but few are more exciting. When you’re dealing with the likes of Selous, Roosevelt, Millais, Foran, Stigand, Patterson, Madeira, Seia, Hallamore, de Lima and Coheleach, you have great reading. $ 125.00
