(by the author of Travels into Bokhara). Frontis and eleven plates (of which two are folding). 398 pp. Burnes worked for the East India company. He was an accomplished linguist so he was able to don native dress and travel through Peshawar and Kabul. He also cross the Hindu Kush mountains and visited Bokhara, Astrabad and Teheran. An important, early work on this interesting part of Central Asia. Full leather, all edhes marbled, marbled end papers. Some scuffing and wear of leather but this has been basically a well cared for copy. Some foxing, mainly on frontis and slight foxing on folding plates. Other plates are clean. Two bookplates, one says Eustace of Ballinglass and the other has written in by hand Lord Derby. VG. Item #1232
