Arabian Highlands. H. St John Philby.

Arabian Highlands

Ithaca NY: Cornell Univ Press, 1952. First. Hardcover. 771 pp, profuse ill, text maps. Large pull out folding map in rear pocket. The highlands of the southwest corner of Saudi Arabia were among the last unexplored parts of the world. In 1932 and again in 1936-7 Philby ventured into these regions and successfully penetrated the area and wrote this amazing record of what he saw and learned. Philby was the second European to cross the Arabian Peninsula from sea to sea, the first to follow the great pilgrim route to Meeca, the first to map the great expanse of the Empty Quarter. He was also a military expert. A desirable work, indeed a modern cornerstone of any Middle East collection. A VG+ copy in vg jacket. VG+ / VG. Item #2035
