Plumptre. 2 large format volumes, large folding map, 8 plates, incl. one folding plate. Vol 1 383 pp, appendix, index; vol 2 368 pp, appendix, index, large folding map in front. First English edition. The author, a natural history professor, offered his services to the man appointed as Governor of the Cape Colony in South Africa. The book recounts his travels to Kaffraria and other journeys to the west and north of the Cape Colony. There is a lot of information on the wild animals and geographical features of the Cape. Vol 1 deals with travels from Stellenbosch north to the Orange River and then through the Hottentot regions. Volume 2 gives an account of the capture of the Cape Colony by the British and the return journey to Europe. Former owner bookplate. Bound in plain half gilt leather over marbled boards. VG to VG+. Text is pretty clean. There is light to moderate foxing on some of the plates and pages opposite the plates. Still tight in binding. VG to vg+. Item #3920
