The Journal of Frederick Horneman's Travels

London: W Bulmer, 1802. First Edition. Hardcover. from Cairo to Mourzuk, the Capital of the Kingdom of Fezzan in Africa in the years 1797-8. Quarto. 195 pp, 2 large folding maps by Rennell. First English edition. Horneman was the first European (0ver 200 years ago) to visit the northeastern Sahara. He set out from Cairo with hopes of exploring the Niger River. Good +: text is mostly clean but there are some pages with foxing, also small 1/3" x 1 1/4" piece clipped from table of contents page and top 1' missing from title page. Maps are clean and crisp as most of the text is very nice. The paper covered boards show wear at corners and the leather spine shows some rubbing. The contrasting colored gilt spine label is nice. An interesting early work. Horneman's progress was delayed when the French arrived and imprisoned all Europeans but he was released after Bonaparte arrived and special arrangements were made for transmission of his despatches to London. Good+. Item #3923
