Hardcover. in the years 1818, 19 and 20, accompanied by geographical notices of Soudan and a course of the Niger with a chart of the routes and a variety of colored plates. Large 4to format. 383 pp, large engraved folding map in front, chromolithograph plates. Lyon was sent with another explorer to determine the course of the River Niger and the locate of Timbuktu. Lyon turned out to be the sole survivor on this mission and he wrote this book when he returned. He was interested in Arab culture and learned fluent Arabic so that he could communicate with and learn more about the desert people. Lyon did discover that the Niger ran into a what is now Lake Chad and he provided information on many other remote places in North Africa. Bound in half leather over patterned cloth, marbled end papers. Very Good. Item #3985
