Serpa Pinto headed the Portuguese exploring expedition through central south Africa from Benguella on the west African coast to the upper Zambesi regions. Orig. gilt cloth with gilt titles on spines and upper boards and caravan scene outlines on upper boards. Pinto's expedition went from Benguella on the west African coast to the regions of the Upper Zambesi. It was an important expedition, more to explore than to hunt, but it is one of the most important ever done on this area. He did manage to hunt lions and elephant. One of the great reading travel & exploration books. Since the first ed. was in Portuguese, English language editions were printed in small numbers and today are rare and never seen in nice condition. This is a near fine set in original gilt and elaborate scene stamped cloth.VG+ set in original gilt and scene stamped cloth covers. Scarce in either American or British edition. VG to almost vg+.
