Jock The Art of Edmund Caldwell and The Art of Edmund Caldwell Volume II

Mazoe Rhodesia: Frank Read Press, 1978. Caldwell, Edmund. First Limited to 250 Copies. Gilt Stamped Imit. Morocco. Two volumes. First volume: 260 pp, ill. Limited to 250 copies, this being number 41. List of subscribers. Jock of the Bushveld by Fitzpatrick is considered one of the great stories of the South African frontier. It is a book for people of all ages and had gone through many printings over the past 100 years - all of them always selling out. The Caldwell illustrations are memorable, among the best ever produced by the noted artist. Caldwell was so moved by the manuscript that he agreed to do a great number of illustrations. When, years later, Frank Read received all the illustrations he decided to produce a set of books, one on the Art of Caldwell for Jock of the Bushveld and another on Edmund Caldwell's art. Each book is 18 inches tall, 12.5 inches wide and 1 5/8 inches thick Both are bound in half red leather over double thick linen covered boards. Four years later in 1982 Frank Read finished his second monumental work, The Art of Edmund Caldwell Volume II also limited to 250 copies. Both of these books are a matched number 41. The second book shows all of Caldwell's illustrations of African game animals - descriptive text plus 44 full page color plates. There is a description of each game animal and also a piece on Caldwell himself. In the annals of sporting art, this set is without parallel. The books are both very near fine with minor (and we mean minuscule) rubbing of leather in a very few places. The book cloth remains almost as new and internally it appears as if no one ever read the books. They have indeed been well cared for. These entirely hand made books were produced at a time when the Zimbabwe dollar cost more than the US dollar! and the works could not be reproduced today at anywhere near the cost. Fine. Item #4932
