In Darkest Africa- Emin Pasha relief expedition set of glass slides

London: none listed. Hardcover. from Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. A rare piece of Henry Stanley Memorabilia and a super set of photographic glass slides. 42 slides - all numbered and almost all amazingly with their original fragile paper labels! These slides were issued by permission of the Graphic Magazine to illustrate articles on Stanley's relief expedition and supposedly offered to schools and other places that might be interested in offering lectures on the "hero" of In Darkest Africa. Amazingly all of the slides are in great condition, no chips or cracks. Each slide is numbered and the labels match the numbers on the slides. They are most interesting to look at. The slides include: Introduction, Group of Officers, Map of the expedition with heads of group leaders, Lt Stairs wounded by poisoned arrow, Lt. Stairs charged by wounded lion, Skeletons of man, dwarf and gorilla, Starvation Camp, Emin Pasha crossing Albert Nyazna, Mountains of the Moon discovered by Stanley, Execution of Sudanese Mountaineer, Stanley's Farewell to Africa and Wedding of Stanley at Westminster Abbey to name a few, Each slide is crisp and clear and could easily be scanned. We have never seen or even heard of a similar set. Surely only a small number of these sets was likely issued and, given the nature of the glass, it is likely that only a small number would have survived. The slides are housed in a custom linen cloth clamshell folding box with four separators or place markers. The custom leather label reads Henry Stanley, In Darkest Africa, Glass slide set. Near Fine.
